16-year-old arrested; deliberate shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school taking pictures that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which is able to result in demise or great bodily harm.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley High College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic items that might be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College safety stays a high priority for the department," police mentioned in a press release. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the varsity's community that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing risk to its schools. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our normal observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we were assured that this particular person didn't pose a right away risk to the Berkeley High College group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion against the student. 

In addition, a town corridor meeting titled: ' Speak to Kids About School Violence' provided by Alameda County Workplace of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
