Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech giant mentioned its iconic music player has been changed by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, said: "At present, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an unimaginable music experience across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with support for spatial audio - there isn't any better way to take pleasure in, uncover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that would maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new category of digital music player that allows you to put your complete music assortment in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the identical once more."

Similar MP3 gamers released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success because the iPod.

Apple has launched five variations of its music participant - the Classic, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.
