Nashville Public Library launches ‘Freedom to Read’ marketing campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It's a matter that is taken hold in Tennessee: books like "Maus" or "Walk Two Moons" have been pulled from shelves.

Whereas those books is likely to be banned from some colleges, there is nonetheless some place else you will discover them.

"Our job is simply to ensure that in order for you it, it is here for you," stated Public Info Officer for the Nashville Public Library, Ed Brown.

"'Maus' is all checked out right now," said Brown. "So we acquired more copies on order but as soon as word obtained round about what happened in McMinn County, we acquired numerous holds."

These are simply a number of the two million different materials at the Nashville Public Library.

"A lot of people do not wish to learn these books; they do not want their children to have to learn these books, or compelled to learn these books, and that is high quality," said Brown. "However there are a lot people who do, and we want to be there for the individuals who do need to read these materials."

And if you want to make your love for these materials identified, what better approach than along with your library card? The 5,000 limited edition playing cards for the marketing campaign say "I read banned books."

"We all watch the TV reveals that we like; all of us watch the different sports activities or root for the completely different teams we're part of," said Brown. "Books are not any different."

The purpose is to get the 5,000 library playing cards within the fingers of recent sign-ups this month.

"We're not trying to be a push back — a power pushing back towards these decisions — we need to be an alternative to say, in case you may not be able to get it there... you may get it right here," said Brown.
