Parent with hid weapon unintentionally shoots self while at Arlington ISD college, police say

Arlington police stated Duff Elementary College was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a father or mother with a hid weapon had his gun by chance go off, hitting the dad or mum in the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary Faculty was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a parent with a concealed weapon had his gun unintentionally go off, hitting the mother or father within the leg.

The school had early release and college students were released at the planned time of 12:10 p.m.

In response to police, the mum or dad, recognized as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and by accident shot himself. His damage was not severe.

The college district said White was inside the constructing, close to the foyer space, and not within the hallway near students when the gun went off.

Police and school officers stated there was no risk made and the mum or dad did not have "malicious intent."

No college students or workers were injured. The dad or mum was taken to an area hospital after being shot within the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones mentioned after White was launched from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited places and discharge of a firearm in certain municipalities.

In the two days for the reason that Uvalde mass school shooting, there have been 5 instances in North Texas associated to weapons brought to varsities or threats made.

Arlington dad and mom mentioned their minds instantly considered the worst when they were notified.

No dad or mum ever needs there to be a motive for them to get a textual content message saying their child's faculty is on lockdown.

However since this week's lethal capturing at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they can't assist however assume the worst once they do.

"Once I obtained the text message, I was like, ‘Oh my God, something goes to happen.’ I used to be shocked," parent Karima Rasheed mentioned.

While most times, lockdowns are solely drills college students have to participate in, Rasheed's son, Rami, said that realizing what occurred earlier this week made this lockdown completely different. 

"I began seeing my classmates starting to cry and our teacher got a notification on their cellphone saying somebody was in the constructing," he mentioned.

Guns aren't allowed on school property, and fogeys FOX 4 spoke with stated even when it was a mistake, the timing is just terrible.

"What are we going to do? They need to go to high school, and obviously, statistically, it is unlikely to occur, but you never need to be the one statistic. What if it's your youngsters?" Matthew Mitchell stated.

Mitchell lives across the street from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to another Arlington faculty. 

"I’m terrified, absolutely terrified. I’ve received twin six-year-olds that go to a different Arlington faculty and every time I hear there's a lockdown or a school taking pictures, my coronary heart jumps into my throat," he mentioned.

Rasheed mentioned Thursday was the commencement day for 6th grade students at Duff Elementary.

Whereas driving her son to highschool in the morning, she had a chat with him about Uvalde and what to do if one thing ever happened at his college.

"If one thing happened, you’ve received to run anywhere that’s secure and conceal," she told her youngster.

Whereas some say the incident in Uvalde is simply too recent to talk politics, Mitchell said one thing must be finished now. 

"They want to speak about it, they wish to marketing campaign on it, they need to fundraiser on it, however they don’t need to actually cross any laws and do something," he added.
