If permitted, it would be the biggest development of illegal settlement plans since US President Joe Biden took workplace.

Israel is set to advance plans for the construction of 4,000 unlawful settler properties in the occupied West Bank, the interior minister has said.

Inside minister Ayelet Shaked, a staunch supporter of settlements, wrote in a Tweet on Friday that a planning committee would convene next week to approve 4,000 houses, calling building within the West Financial institution a “basic, required and apparent thing”.

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported that the Civil Administration, a military body, would meet Thursday to advance 1,452 units, and that one other 2,536 models would be permitted by defence minister Benny Gantz.

Israeli settlements are fortified, Jewish-only housing complexes built on Palestinian land in violation of international regulation. Between 600,000 and 750,000 Israeli settlers reside in at the least 250 illegal settlements within the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.

If authorized, it will be the largest development of settlement plans since US President Joe Biden took office. The White Home is opposed to settlement progress because it further erodes the possibility of an eventual two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian battle.

US ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides was quoted by native media on Friday as saying the Biden administration has repeatedly made it clear to Israel during the past week that it strongly opposes any additional settlement growth activity.

The transfer comes forward of a planned visit by Biden to Israel, slated for June.

Issa Amro, a Palestinian activist and founding father of the Youth In opposition to Settlements NGO, told Al Jazeera that the approval of 4,000 new settler properties would imply “extra Israeli settler violence in direction of Palestinians in the West Financial institution” and extra “restrictions and apartheid polices” to be imposed on the Palestinians.

“It's an indicator that Israel is violating worldwide regulation with impunity and without accountability, and it exhibits that the international neighborhood is using double standards with Israel,” Amro stated.

He added the move additionally makes Palestinians feel “extra disillusioned and hopeless” in direction of the Biden administration.

Israel accredited the construction of three,000 settler properties in October despite another US rebuke. Authorities have, however, paused some particularly controversial projects in the wake of robust US opposition.

Israeli settlement expansion in the West Financial institution and East Jerusalem has continued below every Israeli government since Israel captured the territories within the 1967 Middle East struggle.

However, development accelerated in the last few years underneath former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with a significant growth throughout Trump’s US administration, which Palestinians accused of having a strong pro-Israel bias.

Settler attacks in opposition to Palestinians and their property are a regular prevalence within the West Bank, home to nearly three million Palestinians.

The Palestinian leadership wants the West Bank as a part of a future state and views the unlawful settlements as a serious impediment to any potential deal.

Earlier this year, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said Israel is committing the crime of apartheid in opposition to Palestinians within the occupied Palestinian territories (OPT).

Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has pursued a policy of creating and maintaining a “Jewish demographic majority”, Amnesty stated. Israel also workouts full management over land and resources to profit Jewish Israelis, including those in illegal settlements.
