Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech large said its iconic music player has been replaced by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said: "At this time, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an unimaginable music expertise across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with assist for spatial audio - there is not any higher approach to get pleasure from, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the primary MP3 player that might maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new class of digital music participant that lets you put your complete music assortment in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he stated on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same once more."

Similar MP3 gamers released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success because the iPod.

Apple has launched 5 variations of its music participant - the Classic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent years, with cell phone technology enabling prospects to hearken to music providers on their phones.

In 2014, the basic click wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano have been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod contact was the one mannequin still on sale at this time.
